A survey by virtual office staffing agency Intelligent Office finds that more and more employees are choosing where they want to work, rather than being assigned a standard workplace location. Specifically, 70% of the employees surveyed work from alternate locations on a regular basis.
No longer confined to their office, more than half of those surveyed are working in three or more places.
“This survey further identifies that today’s workers are continuing to shift towards a more personal and custom work style,” said Tom Camplese, chief operating officer for Intelligent Office. “We are continuing to find that to maintain productivity while increasing mobility, a new breed of worker is conducting business on the go, and wants to be able to work more independently, from anywhere and at any time.”
The research shows that 29% of employees like to use libraries, hotels and restaurants as alternative workspaces, while 28% prefer doing work from coffee shops.
The top things employees are doing while out of the office includes working independently, working whiletraveling and holding meetings, the study found.
Employees in Canada are adopting flexible work environments more quickly than workers in the U.S. The study shows that 47% of Canadians working in alternative locations do so at least once a week, compared with just 22% of Americans.
In the U.S., more than 50% of employees in California, Texas and Colorado are regularly working outside of their home and traditional office.
The study was based on surveys of nearly 1,100 employees in the U.S. and Canada.
